  1. Install
I came across a very frustrating issue when trying to update the firmware on my Canon 5D Mark III today.

In order to update the firmware on the Canon camera, I needed to have the Canon software “EOS Utility” installed ( Or I could’ve used a CF Card Reader and copied the files to the root of the card, but I didn’t have one on hand at the moment).

Sadly, I long ago developed the habit of throwing away any bloatware that comes with product purchases, so I didn’t have the install disc that comes with the camera. Looking for a download online, I followed a link on Canon’s website to download EOS Utility.

When I downloaded the EOS Utility program from the Canon website and ran the install file ( I’m using Windows 8.1), I was prompted to insert the install CD. This year being 2014, and CDs being one more computing innovation away from being obsolete, I was flabbergasted. I could NOT find a way to install EOS Utility without the install disc. I would’ve thought that Canon wants its consumers to have access to its own proprietary software.

Positive that I wasn’t the first person to be angered at this anachronistic prerequisite in this age of cloud computing, I did a good old Google search. It wasn’t super-easy to find the info, but I came across this super-helpful web page with the following instructions that will hack the Windows Registry to allow the EOS Utility install file downloaded from the Canon website to be installed without a physical copy of the install CD:

Open Notepad and write (or copy/paste into Notepad) the following (exactly):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonEOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonDPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonZoomBrowser EX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonPhotoStitch
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonEOS Capture]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeCanonEOSViewerUtility]

Note that you only need the entries for the software you want to install, but there’s no problem setting up everything.

Save as CanonUpdate (note .txt extension will be automatically added)

Rename the file CanonUpdate.txt as CanonUpdate.reg

Right-click on CanonUpdate.reg and select the Merge option

You’ll be prompted to see if you wish to add this info into the Registry. Answer ‘Yes’

You can now install any software update, without having the original installed.

  • Update for 6.3.1
  • To install ZoomBrowser 6.3.1, the registry key:
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser EX]
  • needs to be changed to:
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECanonZoomBrowser EXInstall]

And it worked. Fairly simple step-by-step process. I constantly thank the collective brainpower of helpful, knowledgeable people. Thanks!
